The Stamp Act

The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament 245 years ago today. The American Colonies were extremely upset by this tax, as they felt it was an over-reach of Parliament in an area that belonged to the Colonial Legislatures, and also because of the pervasiveness of the Act. Colonists protested and demonstrated against the Stamp Act, sometimes violently. The British Parliament repealed the Stamp Act nearly one year to the day later (18 March 1766), but they also passed the inflammatory Declaratory Act on that same day.
