Damn It, Brett!

I am so sick of this Favre controversy. Sure, Favre may have a few seasons left in him, but with his constant on-again-off-again retirement drama, it is difficult to plan a draft and an offense around a maybe/maybe not quarterback. Personally, I'd rather see him just fade back into retirement and be done with it.

At this point, though, it really doesn't matter what happens. The damage has been done, and I put most of the blame at Favre's feet.

If the Packers give into Favre, there will be division in the fan base, and most likely the locker-room. Keep in mind that, just three years ago, Favre was saying this about Javon Walker wanting to re-negotiate his contract.

"We've got guys who'll give great effort. Stars are made that way. Look what happened when Sterling left. Robert Brooks stepped up. We can win without him.

"Maybe I'm old-school, but I always thought you honor a contract. Sure, sometimes guys pass you up in salary, and maybe it's a lesser player, but it's all based on what a team has as far as value in that person.

"I sure hope the Packers don't give in to him."
Many in Green Bay agreed with Favre then, but there is a great split over whether or not the Packers should give in to Favre now.

If Favre starts and does poorly, there will be complaints about wasting money on bringing back Brett for Brett's sake. If Rodgers starts and does poorly, with Favre as backup, there will be complaints about hurting the Packers' chances for the 2008 season in order to make a point. If Favre is traded and does well, especially if the Packers don't do as well, then there will be rumblings about why the Packers traded him instead of bringing him back.

Each and every scenario could end badly for either Favre or the Packers, and they are all predicated on a bunch of "ifs." Unfortunately, each and every one of those scenarios wouldn't be an issue we didn't need to deal with the first big "if" of this mess.

If only Favre had stayed retired.
