President For Life Bill?

The 22nd Amendment limits a president to serving no more than two terms.

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.
Representative Jose Serrano, the Democrat who currently represents New York's 16th Congressional District, has sponsored a bill to repeal the 22nd Amendment.

111th CONGRESS
1st Session
H. J. RES. 5

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

January 6, 2009

Mr. SERRANO introduced the following joint resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary

JOINT RESOLUTION

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President.

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled (two-thirds of each House concurring therein), That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification:
'Article--
'The twenty-second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.'.
I haven't heard a media uproar about this, but I'm willing to bet that pundits in the MSM would have been much more vocally concerned had this same bill been proposed by the representative of New York's 3rd Congressional District in January of 2005. Then we would have likely heard rumblings that the bill was move by Republicans to set the stage for a President-For-Life Bush. I'll wait to see if the media jumps on this one, and what the slant of their coverage is (pro/con) if they do, but I don't really expect any extensive coverage of this bill by the MSM.

Removing presidential term limits only opens the door for a president-for-life, so contact your Congressional Representative and let him or her know that you expect this to be strongly opposed.

This is not good news if it goes through. American Catholics need to pray that his never passes.

Joe,
I love that four years of Lent thing!

Smiley,
I agree. I'll pray, but I also remember that God helps those who help themselves. I've already contacted my representative in the House, and I'll contact my second senator once I find out if it is Coleman or Franken.
